She Did It!

Jessica, Triumphant:

Update: SHE DID IT! Jessica finished her first marathon in 4 hours, 24 minutes, and 42 seconds!

Here's a picture that was taken just 15 minutes after her finish:

I think she's happier than she looks! Congratulations, Jessica!!

Jessica is past the 20 mile mark - three-quarters done - in 3:17:21!

We've also had two new donations so the total raised is now up to $2831!

Halfway! She passed the 13.1 marker in 2:06:58!

Jessica has passed the 5.9 mile marker in 56 minutes and 50 seconds! Go Jessica!!

The gun has fired and Jessica is away!

Jessica and her supporters made ribbons to wear:

Then went to packet pickup and enjoyed the pre-race festivities:

Even the last few hours pre-race was filled with adventure. Jessica left a shoe in San Francisco, and thankfully had a wonderful friend who left San Francisco at 3:30am to bring it to her!

Jessica also surpassed her THIRD fundraising goal. The final total is $2755. So many thanks go out to everyone who is supporting her!

Keep watching here for updates on Jessica's progress! We'll be getting live updates at 5.9 miles, halfway, and 20 miles, as well as her finish, which I will post here!

SF_Half_Marathon

Welcome to my race for awareness!  My name is Jessica, and I run. I run for my health, I run for the challenge, and I run because I love to. THIS SUNDAY December 5th, I will be running in my first marathon ever, the California International Marathon, for the members of my family who suffer with chronic, painful, and debilitating gastrointestinal conditions.

Follow me, #4224 as I run along the American River from the Folsom Dam to the State Capitol!CIM Course

This run will be to raise awareness of functional gastrointestinal and motility disorders (FGIMDs) and to raise funds for the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (IFFGD); an organization dedicated to advancing medical research into FGIMDs and supporting individuals affected by these conditions.

Race For Awareness is a new organization committed to raising awareness and financial support for important issues that need solutions but receive little attention. Difficult problems are even harder to solve when people do not know they exist.

Just like the effort to find innovative treatment options and cures for FGIMDs, my effort to prepare for a 26.2 mile run needs your help! Please help me succeed by making a tax-deductible donation in my name to the IFFGD. You can donate now by clicking the donation button or you can mail a check to IFFGD, P.O. Box 170864, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53217 and include “Jessica” in the subject line. Please give what you can, every contribution helps!

If you have an inspirational song, suggest it to me after making a donation using the "Add comment" link below, and I will add it to the playlist that I listen to while I am training and running.

Thank you for your support! I look forward to seeing you out there!

A note from a loved one and a survivor

I'm privileged to share with everyone here that the young woman poised to run this grueling race--Jessie--happens to be my inspiring niece!  She is a dynamic, insightful person who has not only excelled in her graduate studies and real-world efforts to improve our natural environment but in her desire to ease people's pain and brighten everyone's day.  Her laugh is contagious, her words sincere, and her efforts most genuine.  She has traveled the globe and makes friends everywhere she goes, expanding her understanding of diverse cultures and broadening her belief in bridging gaps.

When she informed me of her plans in dedicating this marathon to raising awareness and support for research to benefit those of us with chronic gastrointestinal motility disorders, I cried her a river of her very own--one of gratification, that is.  I was just so moved that this incredibly determined girl loved me enough to increase an already hectic workload by coordinating with IFFGD, juggling a boatload of details in making this happen.  She said her goal was to run for me and others who couldn't run.

It takes a lot of sweat and heart, and for those of you readers dealing with daily digestive complications, you know how painful, isolating, frustrating and life-changing these conditions can be.

That's why I'm proud to say that Jessie is one of those special people who reminds us of the goodness on this planet and offers us hope.  My husband and I look forward to following each footfall online.

We love your guts, Jess!

Yes, Jess! You're new middle name is "26.2!" Aunt Pat is all teared up.

Time to replace those complex carbs (we talked about this...).

You are awesome.

I'm lucky I get to brag about having the coolest sister ever.
Thanks for helping to raise awareness (and money for research!) for something that causes so much suffering in the lives of so many.
Roscoe and I are cheering you on, today, and every day!

A wonderful Christmas surprise for me!!!

What a joy to see you after so many years!!! What a magnificant undertaking on your part to help those suffering from these horrible disorders!!! If people were only aware of the terrible agony these unfortunate sufferers go thru 24/7 without any relief in sight, research would be effectively funded bringing progress and a cure much sooner!!!

You have won our hearts as well as the marathon with the first step you take in this race!!! Take care of yourself. Our prayers are with you every step of the way!!!

An inspirational song for me is "The Impossible Dream" from the "Man of LaMancha" (sp)!!!

Love, Grandpa and Marlene McArthur

Thank you!

Uplifting Song

"Long May You Run" by Neil Young. An oldie that never fails to lift my spirits.

Long may I run...

Thank you I've never heard this song and I can't wait to put it on my mix... I love Neil Young. And I'll need him to get through the next training run (20 miles) and of course, on the big day.

Best wishes to you, thanks again for the song suggestion!

Song

'I Can See Clearly Now' by Jimmy Cliff. That song has more than once helped me through some challenging times. Good luck and thanks.

Seeing clearly...

I haven't listened to this in years-- Thank you. I love the concept, the motivation, and the theme of the song is quite appropriate for San Francisco weather/training! Thank you so much for the support. Warmly, Jessica
